Description:  This course will focus on treatment planning and rehabilitation strategies for a patient with burns.  We will review how to utilize information gained in evaluation and skin assessment to determine an appropriate course of action, and what to watch for as a burn matures. Specifically, we will discuss scar management techniques including the use of scar massage, compression garments, and face masks. We will review how to prescribe appropriate functional exercise programs based on body areas affected. Serial casting, splinting, and other types of bracing to prevent contractures will also be reviewed.

Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss use of scar management techniques including scar massage and compression garments.
  • Summarize the unique considerations of management of facial burns, including use of appliances as appropriate.
  • Describe appropriate exercises and functional activities based on a patient’s areas of burn.
  • Discuss role of serial casting and splinting for contracture management and prevention of joint
    deformities.
