Description: Every Health Care Professional should know the importance of developing the best methods for delivering education to the patients, family and caregivers we serve. Clinicians can identify how advanced skills in delivering patient education is an important goal to improve a person’s ability to adjust to life after a trauma or life altering event. Health care professionals will identify and apply a variety of techniques and strategies to build into their education session to enhance their ability to deliver excellent patient education. Clinicians will learn how to balance visuals, words to influence carry over, and retention of new information in each patient interaction. Clinicians will learn how to integrate the Patient Centered Education Model (PCEM) to support a patient’s ability to make informed decisions, navigate the health care system and access resources to manage his own care. You will learn how to identify different learning styles of each family member as part of the healing team. The clinician will build and apply simple analogies as they engage in their education session. Key resource documents / website links will be shared throughout the session.

Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the Patient Centered Education Model (PCEM).
  • Identify how the application of “Talking Notes” can impact the patient, family and caregivers’ various learning styles during daily education sessions.
  • Define the Teach-Back or Show-Me Method of educating in one case study.
