Description: There are 130,000 lower limb amputations performed in the US per year and 1.2 million living with amputation (Dillingham, 2002). This webinar will review medical rehabilitation management and describe surgical principles and techniques for common levels of amputation. Pain and skin issues affecting recovery will be identified.

Instructors: Mark Huang, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University and attending physician at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. His areas of clinical specialty include amputee rehabilitation, prosthetics and orthotics, cancer, and stroke rehabilitation.

Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe surgical principles and surgical approaches to most common levels of lower limb amputation
  • Review the principles of post-operative medical management of patients with lower limb amputation
  • Define the common complications after amputation
